A lot has happened since our last update. Lets start with the State of the Union. President Obama gave his first official State of the Union Address before a Joint Session of Congress last Wednesday, where he talked a great deal about controlling the deficit and then proposed numerous new spending programs. Hmmm, those don’t seem like mutually exclusive items. One of his ideas, a “freeze” in discretionary spending starting in 2011 landed with a thud in the Democratic Caucus with Speaker Pelosi saying that she wouldn’t support it unless the Department of Defense is included. Usually not a great idea to cut defense spending with so much turmoil in the world while finishing up one war and furthering engagement in another.
